Elimination Disorders: Support for Encopresis & Enuresis

These problems can be cured!

Bedwetting and soiling accidents can be emotionally draining for families and especially difficult for children or teens to navigate. If your child is struggling with enuresis (urinary incontinence, including bedwetting) or encopresis (fecal incontinence or soiling), you are not alone—and there is support available.

We provide compassionate, evidence-based treatment for elimination disorders. Our goal is to reduce the shame, stress, and confusion that often come with these conditions and help families create a clear, manageable path forward.

What Are Elimination Disorders?

• Enuresis refers to repeated urination in clothes or bed after age 5.

• Encopresis involves repeated stool accidents after age 4, often related to constipation or withholding.

While both are more common than many parents realize, they can seriously affect a child’s self-esteem, social life, and family relationships. Our clinicians understand the emotional and behavioral components involved—and how to treat them in a developmentally appropriate and supportive way.

Treatment That Works!

We follow the medical-behavioral model and take a parent-centered approach that includes:

• Collaborating with pediatricians to ensure underlying medical issues are addressed

• Psychoeducation to help families understand what’s happening in the body and brain

• Behavioral interventions to support regular toileting routines and reduce withholding

• Motivational systems and progress tracking using tools like our custom “Poop Tracker”

• Ongoing coaching for parents to reduce power struggles and increase cooperation

Even if you have tried all of these before, our decades of experience treating these problems often lead to much better outcomes than in parents do them alone or even with other providers. With the right structure and support, most children begin to experience improvement within a few months.

How long before I see improvement?

The full process typically takes 2–3 months, though this varies by case. Many families begin to see positive changes even before then—such as fewer accidents or reduced conflict around toileting.

For therapy (available in NY), we are out-of-network providers and can issue superbills that you may submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Coaching (available in any state) is not covered by insurance.

Noncompliance is common and expected. Since therapy or coaching is parent-focused, your child does not need to participate directly. We work with you to implement behavioral strategies that reduce power struggles and increase compliance over time.

We see children of any age with constipation, withholding, or accidents—even if they’re younger than typical diagnostic age. Early support can prevent long-term challenges.

This is primarily a parent-focused treatment because that is what the scientific evidence suggests is most effective. Most kids do not want to talk to a stranger about this problem and it will only slow things down to include them. If they want to speak to the therapist, we are happy to accommodate that because a well-informed child makes the whole treatment run more smoothly.

The type of treatment we do, which is called the medical-behavioral approach has been shown to stop accidents in 70-80% of families. Given our experience, our rates are higher, assuming parent consistency with our suggestions.

Absolutely. We have worked with hundreds of families who feel like accidents will never end. They are exhausted and resentful. Many time, we can turn things around. We specialize in treating the toughest cases of elimination disorders!
